Animal Aid Happy, Health Family Pet Classes and Workshops

Animal Aid is hosting a series of seminars and
hands-on workshops based around activities that promote the physical and emotional health of
pets and their families. Our goal? Prevent pets from entering the rescue cycle in the first place!

Year after year we deal with the aftermath as too many otherwise fine animals are abandoned for an issue that could have been solved if the owner had timely access to information about other options.

Where will the classes be held?

Two local businesses have generously allowed us to share their space:

Tellington TTouch®
2-Workshop Series

TTouch® offers a positive no-force approach to training. Using a combination of specific touches, lifts, and movement exercises, TTouch® helps to release tension and increase body awareness.

It has been used successfully to address excessive barking and chewing; fear biting; dog-to-dog reactivity; timidity, nervousness and shyness; separation anxiety; overall emotional and physical well being; and much more.

Thank you, Ute!

Alternatives to Declawing

Dr. Amy Tongue will discuss various alternatives to declawing our cats – and why we should consider declawing to be a last alternative.  We will learn tools that will give our cats what they need without tearing up the furniture, curtains, rugs...

Beaverton Library Kids Program:
Family Pet Care and Rescue

Thinking of getting a new pet? Trying to figure out how to keep your current pet happy, safe, and healthy? This joint effort by the Beaverton Library and Animal Aid targets youngsters grades 2-5.

Animal Aid volunteers will share about how to make wise choices for successful rescue, adoption, or fostering cats and dogs. Activities will include how to safely meet/handle a live cat or dog (they're different!) and a lively, thought-provoking game that illustrates the multiplicative nature of unaltered cats.

Sharing Your Garden with Your Best Friend

What makes a garden pet friendly?

  • Is digging a problem in your garden?
  • Is your yard a safe haven for all family members?
  • Is your pet getting the best of your plants?

Pick up some ideas to blend happy pets and beautiful gardens. We’ll discuss frequent challenges that may come up and solutions towards impact from active four-legged friends.

Anne Taylor and Melinda Frey are local landscape designers as well as pet owners, who realize there is a need for available resources to blend the needs of people and their pets in their gardens. They’re offering this class to share the knowledge they’ve gained through their own experiences.

Thank you, Anne and Melinda, for sharing your expertise!

Have Some Good Ideas For Classes?

If you have suggestions for other classes – or even better, if you would like to offer your services as one of our volunteer instructors – we'd love to hear from you! We could only pay you with our thanks, but we promise to generate as much publicity for you as we can muster.

Education About Animal Rescue

Whenever possible (given our tiny staff) we support the education of groups who want to learn more about animal rescue and the problems created when pets are not spayed or neutered.

Frequently this involves a pre-arranged "field trip" to our shelter, where the groups have an opportunity to get first-hand experience in handling a large volume of cats. Other times, a volunteer Animal Aid Outreach Team and a few laid-back kitties will travel to a classroom to give a talk.

These occasions have afforded us very rich relationships with young people in local schools and Scout troops, many of whom become significant volunteer contributors to our programs. One class of creative youngsters wrote and filmed a "commercial" aimed at recruiting foster families for us!

Groups are not limited to the young, of course. We have regular and occasional visits by “disabled” groups (Christie school, Quiet Waters, Clackamas County and Washington County transition programs).
